102                 Purpose of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)   

SNAP - 7 CFR 271.1

A.    Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is designed to promote the general welfare and safeguard the health and well being of the nation's population by raising the levels of nutrition among low-income households.

B.    SNAP is benefits provided to the states by the federal government for issuance to eligible low-income assistance units to spend through the normal channels of trade on food and food items.
